SUMMARY: Starting November 1, Texas hospitals will be required to ask patients about their citizenship status, as mandated by Governor Abbott’s executive order. This initiative aims to gather data on the costs of healthcare provided to uninsured undocumented immigrants, with reports to be submitted quarterly by March 2025. Currently, one in six Texans lacks health insurance, and hospitals in Texas have spent over $3 billion on uncompensated care. Despite this order, hospitals will still provide emergency care to all patients, regardless of citizenship. There remains strong support among hospital leaders for Medicaid expansion to address uninsured care issues.

Starting next month, hospitals across the state will be required to collect information about how much it costs to care for uninsured, undocumented immigrants. FOX 4’s Steven Dial takes a look at how that information will be used.
