SUMMARY: Birmingham has experienced a prolonged dry spell, with no rain for four consecutive weeks, potentially leading to the driest October on record in 2024. Previous low rainfall records were set in 2016 and the 1930s. While the drought monitor indicates that most of central and north Alabama are only experiencing level one drought conditions thanks to above-average rainfall in September, October’s dryness is concerning. Meteorologist Brylee Brown notes that despite expectations for more rain in the coming fall and winter months, La Niña patterns could result in continued dryness and below-average precipitation into November and beyond.
