Mayor responds to questions about bribery scandal
SUMMARY: At a recent news conference, the mayor addressed questions about his potential involvement in a bribery case, following Sheriff Marv Smith’s guilty plea to conspiracy related to an FBI investigation. The investigation also implicated former city council member Angelique Lee, who pleaded guilty to similar charges after resigning. The inquiry involves a fake real estate deal for a hotel at the Jackson Convention Complex. When asked if he was one of the unnamed “Jackson elected officials” tied to the case, the mayor repeatedly denied any criminal conspiracy. Councilman Kenneth Stokes, a critic of the mayor, raised concerns about public trust in government.
