Carly Gregg appeals verdict to Mississippi Supreme Court
SUMMARY: Carly Gregg, a Rankin County teenager, was convicted of killing her mother and is appealing her life sentence for first-degree murder to the Mississippi Supreme Court. Her attorney filed a notice of appeal on October 18, seeking to overturn the verdict based on newly discovered evidence that they argue could lead to a different outcome. Prosecutors counter that the defense’s motion lacks specific legal grounds and maintain that the jury’s decision was correct. The incident occurred on March 19, 2024, when Gregg shot her mother and injured her stepfather, Heath Smylie, who reported the shooting to authorities.
