Columbia discusses regulating short-term rentals
SUMMARY: Colombia has become a popular tourist destination, leading some property owners to bypass short-term rental laws for profit. In response, city leaders are increasing enforcement and considering new regulations. Current rules only permit short-term rentals in primary residences and mixed-use areas, yet many owners disregard these stipulations. A recent public meeting revealed divided opinions: some support rentals for tourism and local income, while others argue they disrupt residential neighborhoods. Critics of new policies fear unconstitutional restrictions on property rights. The city’s Planning Commission will gather community feedback to propose potential regulations to the city council by February.
Columbia has turned into enough of a tourist destination that some choose to ignore the city’s short-term rental laws to cash in.
