Ask John: Where is the best place in a house to seek shelter during a tornado?
SUMMARY: WTVA meteorologist John Tusk discusses tornado safety in response to a question from Jaquila Mandon of Tupelo. As severe weather season approaches, he emphasizes the importance of knowing where to seek shelter during a tornado. The safest spots in a home include bathrooms, hallways, closets, or stairwells, as far from windows as possible. Tusk notes that if a basement is available, it offers the best protection, provided all walls are below ground. He also highlights that traditional tornado seasons occur from February through May, making preparedness crucial. Ultimately, a stormhouse is the safest option if available.

Pet of the Week: Matilda
SUMMARY: Chris Menard, a volunteer at the Tupelo Le Humane Society, introduces Matilda, a sweet but initially nervous dog. Once she warms up, her true personality shines. Matilda dislikes leashes but stays close to her companions while walking. She is spayed, up to date on vaccinations, and has no history of heartworms. Matilda came into the shelter with one puppy in August. She is a good size, friendly with kids, and would make a great family pet. The shelter urges the community to meet Matilda and other pets in need of loving homes.
Matilda is WTVA’s Pet of the Week for Oct. 18, 2024.
