Dry conditions in Mississippi increase risk of wildfires
SUMMARY: In October, Mississippi faces increased wildfire risks due to dry conditions, with officials from the Mississippi Forestry Commission (MFC) urging caution. Insufficient rain, low humidity, and winds create ideal circumstances for wildfires to spread, ignited by common hazards like dragging chains or discarded cigarettes. Currently, six counties are under burn bans, which prohibit open flames and activities like campfires. Exemptions exist for certified professionals and agricultural practices. Residents are advised to avoid burning on hot, dry, windy days and to report wildfires immediately by calling 911, as human activities cause nearly 90% of wildfires.
