Transgender women participation in sports debated by Georgia Senate | Georgia
SUMMARY: A Georgia Senate committee meeting focused on transgender athletes in women’s sports has sparked controversy, with former President Trump advocating for an outright ban. He stated that a president could simply prohibit transgender women from competing. Currently, Georgia mandates that athletes compete based on their birth sex, and the Board of Regents recently passed a resolution asking the NCAA to follow similar guidelines. While some argue this protects female athletes, critics, including ACLU representatives, call the bans unconstitutional and an infringement on rights. The committee will hold further meetings before the 2025 legislative session, amid ongoing national debates on the issue.

Study: AI and data centers could drive cost of energy up by 70% over 10 years | Virginia
SUMMARY: A report by the Jack Kemp Foundation warns that average American energy bills could rise by 25% to 70% over the next decade due to soaring energy demands driven by AI, hyperscale data centers, and advanced manufacturing. The surge is straining the U.S. power grid, leading to significant price increases in capacity markets. Dominion Energy disputes these findings, predicting only a 2.5% annual increase in Virginia. The report argues for policy changes, including charging data centers more for energy and halting subsidies for their construction to alleviate the burden on consumers. Recommendations also include implementing minimum take clauses for utility contracts.

Lawmakers push for death penalty for Jose Ibarra
SUMMARY: Jose Ibara was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of nursing student Lakan Riley, prompting controversy over the absence of a death penalty option. Georgia State Senator Colton Moore has called on Attorney General Chris Carr to seek an emergency motion for an execution sentence. Legal expert Darl Cohen confirmed that prosecutors could have pursued the death penalty due to multiple aggravating factors but chose not to, partly to spare the victim’s family from a prolonged trial. Once sentenced, Georgia law prohibits increasing a punishment, meaning the Attorney General cannot alter Ibara’s life sentence.
