In a quarter of Georgia counties, trained prison inmates are firefighters on the job
SUMMARY: Fire Station 2, located in a prison in Georgia, responds to 350-400 emergency calls annually, providing crucial firefighting services in South Atlanta. Amid a firefighter shortage, five select inmates from the Georgia Diagnostic Prison have been trained and certified as firefighters, living at the station instead of prison cells. This program gives inmates a second chance, allowing them to gain skills and employment opportunities after serving their time. Chief BJ Maddox supports this initiative, which operates in 35 counties and responds to about 3,000 calls annually, emphasizing redemption and community service for those striving to reform.
The program allows certain inmates to become certified firefighters while serving their time behind bars and respond to calls in the community.

Nearly $10M spent in U.S. House District 14 | Georgia
SUMMARY: In Georgia’s 14th Congressional District, Republican incumbent Marjorie Taylor Greene is running against Democratic challenger Shawn Harris in a highly expensive race. Greene has raised $7.8 million for her campaign, while Harris has raised nearly $2 million, leaving them with similar amounts to spend as the third fundraising quarter ended. Greene, a prominent figure in the โAmerica Firstโ movement, focuses on issues like defunding the FBI and impeaching President Biden. Despite heavy odds against him after Greene’s 66% win in 2022, Harris remains optimistic, drawing inspiration from previous successful Democratic campaigns in Georgia. Early voting is underway.
