Amid a firefighter shortage, five select inmates from the Georgia Diagnostic Prison have been trained and certified as firefighters, living at the station instead of prison cells. This program gives inmates a second , allowing them to gain skills and employment opportunities after serving their time. Chief BJ Maddox supports this initiative, which operates in 35 counties and responds to about 3,000 calls annually, emphasizing redemption and community service for those striving to reform.
