Texas set to execute Robert Roberson despite claims he was wrongly convicted
SUMMARY: Robert Robertson, convicted of killing his 2-year-old daughter Nikki due to shaken baby syndrome, is facing execution in Texas after spending over 20 years on death row. His case has attracted attention, with a bipartisan group of Texas lawmakers and even the lead detective from the original investigation, Brian Wharton, advocating for his exoneration. Wharton claims Robertson is innocent, citing misinterpretations of his emotions related to autism. Recent revelations, including that Nikki had pneumonia and opioid prescriptions when she died, call the shaken baby syndrome diagnosis into question. Despite appeals for clemency and a 30-day reprieve from Governor Abbott, Robertson’s execution proceeds imminently.
Robertson was convicted of killing his 2-year-old daughter, Nikki Curtis, in 2002. But some argue the conviction was based on faulty and outdated evidence.
