Lawsuit filed against former Jackson State student Joshua Brown
SUMMARY: Shirley Brown, mother of Joshua Brown, has filed a federal lawsuit against Jackson State University (JSU) and several individuals after her son was wrongfully arrested for the shooting death of JSU student Jaylen Burns. The incident occurred on October 20, 2023, following a fight at University Pointe Apartments. Brown alleges that the campus police acted on false statements from members of Burns’ fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha. The lawsuit claims that the wrongful arrest caused Joshua significant mental and financial harm. Former interim JSU president Dr. Elayne Hayes Anthony is also named in the action.

Shots fired after 18-wheeler crash near I-220 in Jackson
SUMMARY: An 18-wheeler accident on I-220 escalated when the driver of one truck was shot at by a suspect who exited a stolen vehicle. After colliding with the truck, the suspect began firing, prompting a foot chase when police arrived. Officers returned fire, injuring the suspect in the lower extremities. The suspect is expected to recover fully and face charges once discharged. No officers were injured during the incident.

Lauderdale County applies for a loan to help develop land, in hopes to bring new business
SUMMARY: The county has initiated a loan application process via the Mississippi Development Authority to finance the development of promising land for future business opportunities. If approved, the loan could be up to $9 million at a 4% interest rate, although the final amount may vary based on needs. Importantly, this funding will not affect taxes or millage rates. The loan will be split between Meridian and Lauderdale County and will be repaid using tax revenue generated from businesses that establish operations on the developed land.
