Major bridge construction project kicks off this week
SUMMARY: Beginning Wednesday, M-DOT will commence a major overhaul of the I-55 bridge over the Pearl River, impacting traffic significantly. Two lanes on both northbound and southbound sides will be closed for over two months, following delays due to the recent fair. The area experiences over 113,000 vehicles daily and has suffered considerable wear. The project involves hydro blasting to remove deteriorated asphalt and repair the underlying rebar, extending the bridge’s lifespan by decades. It will be a 24/7 operation, costing $24.5 million, starting with road striping removal before construction begins. Major delays are anticipated.
