Hoover residents fight EBSCO apartment project rezoning near Highway 280
SUMMARY: EBSCO plans to develop a vacant lot northeast of Publix, near Highways 119 and 280, into a complex featuring over 1,200 residential units, a hotel, and various shops. However, more than 1,200 local residents, led by Ashleigh Lavelle, have signed a petition opposing the project, fearing it will diminish their quality of life. The land is currently zoned for commercial use, a status intended to benefit the community, but EBSCO seeks to change it to residential. Community members express concerns about increased traffic and density. The zoning commission is set to vote on the plan, with potential council review afterwards.

Doctor delays: Some in Alabama waiting months for an appointment
SUMMARY: Long wait times for doctor’s appointments have become a widespread issue in the U.S., affecting patients like 22-year-old Mitch Plamondon, who faced a six-month wait to see a specialist after being diagnosed with type one diabetes. Contributing factors include a shortage of providers due to early retirements during the pandemic and the increasing medical care demands of an aging population. Additionally, the burden of paperwork from health insurance companies is limiting doctors‘ available time for patient care, while the rising costs of practicing medicine aren’t matched by reimbursement rates, leading to financial strains on practices.
