SUMMARY: The Arts District in Asheville, a key economic driver for Western North Carolina’s arts scene, was devastated by Hurricane Helen, with approximately 80% destroyed. Katie Cornell, executive director of Arts AVL, emphasized that many artists and arts are currently closed, leading to significant financial repercussions. The district housed 300 artists and supported $1 in annual sales. To aid recovery, Arts AVL is launching the “Love Asheville From Afar” initiative to connect users with local businesses and an emergency relief grant to $500 stipends for affected artists. Immediate action is crucial to prevent long-term harm to the art sector.

On Sunday, the Executive Director of ArtsAVL — which supports the arts in Asheville and Buncombe County — said roughly 80% of Asheville’s River Arts District was destroyed in the storm, which could carry some major financial implications.
