Filing extension granted to Mississippi inmate on death row since 1976
SUMMARY: Richard Gerald Jordan, a Mississippi inmate on death row since 1976, has been granted an extension until October 31 to file a petition for a rehearing after the state Supreme Court rejected his recent appeal. The 78-year-old was convicted of kidnapping and murdering Edwina Marter, the wife of a bank executive. While Jordan’s attorney cited personal obligations for the extension, the Mississippi Attorney General‘s office seeks to set an execution date, arguing that all previous appeals have been denied. Jordan has also challenged the state’s planned execution methods involving midazolam and other drugs.
