Mississippians warned about hurricane relief scams
SUMMARY: Following hurricanes Milton and Halen, state and federal agencies warn about potential disaster relief scams targeting victims. Experts advise Mississippians to be cautious as scammers exploit disasters for personal gain. Common scams include phishing emails, fraudulent ads, and fake charity links, often enhanced by AI-generated imagery intended to evoke emotional responses. Duplicated GoFundMe pages can also mislead donors. To protect yourself, remain skeptical of suspicious links, use multi-factor authentication for banking, freeze credit reports, and update security software. Donate only to well-known charities like the American Red Cross or Salvation Army and report scams to the Better Business Bureau.
