Hattiesburg Zoo welcomes newborn hyena to animal family
SUMMARY: The Hattiesburg Zoo announced the birth of a hyena cub on September 25, 2023, to mother Pili and father Niru. The healthy cub weighed 1.6 kg at birth and 1.95 kg by October 1. Zoo director Kristen Moore praised Pili’s nurturing instincts. This cub follows Pili and Niru’s first cub, Kito, who is being relocated for breeding. Another cub, Cazimira, born in October 2022, survived and will also be moved for breeding in 2025. The zoo’s breeding program is noted for its success, with careful management increasing cub survival rates, which are typically low in hyenas.
