Morning Forecast – Wednesday, Oct. 9th
SUMMARY: Meteorologist Chase Ward reports clear and cool conditions this morning, with temperatures in the mid to lower 50s and some upper 40s in southern Arkansas. A jacket is advisable for outdoor activities. By this afternoon, highs will reach the mid 80s, continuing a warming trend into the weekend. In Florida, Hurricane Milton has intensified to Category 5 and is expected to make landfall south of Tampa tonight, with severe storm surges and winds impacting the area. Locally, dry conditions persist, contributing to ongoing drought, though a possible shift in winds may alleviate some fire hazards by weekend.
A dry airmass remains in place across the ArkLaMiss and will stay in place at least through Friday. By saturday, winds will begin to shift southerly allowing for dewpoints to climb. This will in turn help with the current fire threat due to the very dry conditions. Milton will track east and make landfall in Florida tonight and track eastward into the Atlantic. Our weather pattern changes next week in regard to temperatures. A dry front will arrive Monday dropping temperatures to the mid and lower 70’s for daytime highs by the late part of next week.

Wednesday 5 AM Tropical Update: Milton to make landfall as cat 4
SUMMARY: Hurricane Milton remains a powerful category 5 storm with sustained winds of 160 mph, expected to make landfall in Florida tonight as a category 4 hurricane. It is moving northeast at 14 mph, predicted to impact areas from Tampa to Orlando with severe wind, storm surge of 10 to 15 feet, and heavy rainfall. Hurricane Hunters report the storm is still strong, although it may lose intensity. The storm’s path is being closely monitored, with potential impacts reaching as far north as Daytona Beach. After the storm passes, conditions will improve in Florida with a cool front expected next week.
Hurricane Milton remains a powerful Category 5 hurricane Wednesday morning. The storm is expected to make landfall on the west side of Florida late Wednesday night as a major hurricane. It will bring life-threatening storm surge up to 15 feet along with damaging winds. The landfall location will likely be somewhere from Tampa Bay down through Sarasota.
Upper-level winds will increase over Milton today, knocking the intensity of winds down, but unfortunately, the surge is coming regardless of the category of the hurricane. The worst impacts will be felt Wednesday evening into the early morning hours on Thursday.
Hurricane Milton peaked Monday afternoon as a powerful category 5 storm with winds of 180 mph and minimum pressure of 897 mb. This makes it one of the top 5 most strongest hurricanes on record in the Atlantic basin.
