Mississippi power companies deploying to help in wake of Hurricane Milton
SUMMARY: As Hurricane Milton approaches the Florida Gulf Coast, expected to make landfall as a Category 4 storm, utility companies from Mississippi are mobilizing to aid affected areas. Entergy Mississippi’s crews, previously restoring power in Virginia from Hurricane Helene, are on standby. Meanwhile, Dixie Electric Power Association has sent 19 linemen to assist Peace River Electric in Florida. These efforts reflect the commitment of utility workers, who are leaving their families to help restore power, as millions may experience outages due to the hurricane. Mississippi itself is not anticipated to be impacted by the storm.

‘Critter catcher’ offers tips to keep wild animals out of homes as temperatures cool
SUMMARY: As fall arrives in Mississippi, wild animals are increasingly seeking shelter in homes, warns Mike McDowell, a licensed nuisance wildlife operator. He emphasizes the urgency for homeowners to seal potential entry points as wildlife prepares for nesting. McDowell cautions that just one female animal, if allowed to enter and breed, can lead to a rapid increase in infestations. He advises against DIY solutions, as they can educate trapped animals, making removal more difficult for professionals. Instead, he recommends contacting an expert to effectively manage any wildlife issues in homes.

Broadway in Jackson cancels upcoming events due to uncertainty of Thalia Mara Hall reopening
SUMMARY: Broadway in Jackson is canceling most of its 2024-25 schedule due to ongoing repairs at Thalia Mara Hall, which has been closed since August due to mold and safety issues linked to faulty HVAC and roof leaks. While the city has secured over $1 million for restoration, a new air chiller is yet to be installed, with no timetable for reopening. Consequently, six of seven planned events will be canceled, although one holiday musical, Mannheim Steamroller Christmas, will still be held at the Mississippi Coliseum on December 27. Refunds for season tickets are being offered.
