SUMMARY: Hurricane Milton remains a powerful category 5 storm with sustained winds of 160 mph, expected to make landfall in Florida tonight as a category 4 hurricane. It is moving northeast at 14 mph, predicted to impact areas from Tampa to Orlando with severe wind, storm surge of 10 to 15 feet, and heavy rainfall. Hurricane Hunters report the storm is still strong, although it may lose intensity. The storm’s path is being closely monitored, with potential impacts reaching as far north as Daytona Beach. After the storm passes, conditions will improve in Florida with a cool front expected next week.

Hurricane Milton remains a powerful Category 5 hurricane Wednesday morning. The storm is expected to make landfall on the west side of Florida late Wednesday night as a major hurricane. It will bring life-threatening storm surge up to 15 feet along with damaging winds. The landfall location will likely be somewhere from Tampa Bay down through Sarasota.

Upper-level winds will increase over Milton today, knocking the intensity of winds down, but unfortunately, the surge is coming regardless of the category of the hurricane. The worst impacts will be felt Wednesday evening into the early morning hours on Thursday.

Hurricane Milton peaked Monday afternoon as a powerful category 5 storm with winds of 180 mph and minimum pressure of 897 mb. This makes it one of the top 5 most strongest hurricanes on record in the Atlantic basin.

SUMMARY: Bear County law enforcement agencies express concern over a new booking policy by Sheriff Javier Salazar, which delays jail intake for suspects requiring medical screening. The directive, aimed at addressing jail deaths, mandates that suspects detoxing from substances or with serious medical conditions must be evaluated at a hospital before booking. This has led to significant delays and complications for officers, with reports of suspects being released instead of booked. Smaller agencies worry that the policy jeopardizes public safety. Despite the concerns raised, Sheriff Salazar maintains that the policy is necessary to improve health outcomes for detainees.
