JPD to increase number of officers in patrol vehicles in high crime areas
SUMMARY: The Jackson City Council has approved a resolution to enhance police presence in high-crime areas by placing two officers in each patrol vehicle to combat violent crimes and drug activity. This decision, made unanimously, addresses concerns about officer safety and response times, which the Assistant Police Chief Wendell Watts aims to keep between three to five minutes. The Jackson Police Department is currently working towards reaching its budget of 275 officers and plans to request additional manpower once fully staffed. Watts emphasized the importance of officer safety and training amidst nationwide challenges facing law enforcement.
