Applications now open for MDAH research fellowships
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Department of Archives and History (MDAH) invites applications for three 2025 fellowships: the Eudora Welty Research Fellowship, the Medgar and Myrlie Evers Research Fellowship, and the Religion in Mississippi History Research Fellowship. Each offers a $5,000 stipend for at least two weeks of summer research at MDAH. The Eudora Welty Fellowship supports graduate students researching the Eudora Welty Collection, while the Evers Fellowship is for early-career scholars studying the Evers Papers. SUMMARY: Elio Gonzalez Fombellida, 78, was arrested in Gulfport after striking a pedestrian who later died and collided with three vehicles. The incident occurred around 5:42 p.m. on Highway 49, where police discovered Fombellida in his car after he fled the scene of an earlier crash involving a UPS truck. He was apprehended without further incident. Authorities found cocaine in his possession, which he claimed belonged to a friend. Initially charged with leaving the scene of an accident and drug possession, Fombellida’s charges are expected to escalate following the pedestrian’s death. He is currently held on a $300,000 bond.
