Daphne vet among those honored in new monument
SUMMARY: Sergeant Jimmy Black from Daphne, killed in what is considered the final battle of Vietnam, will be honored with a new monument recognizing this overlooked chapter of history. Black was one of 23 Airmen who volunteered for a rescue mission after the fall of Saigon in 1975, but their helicopter crashed, impacting the mission’s outcome. His niece, Jennifer Stelling, has spent years gathering items and documents related to her uncle’s service, seeking recognition for the fallen. A monument featuring the names and images of the lost Airmen will be dedicated at Joint Base San Antonio this week, with efforts ongoing to raise funds for additional memorials.
