Mississippi wildlife officials release updated chronic wasting disease management zones
SUMMARY: Mississippi wildlife officials are informing the public about chronic wasting disease (CWD) management zones due to its severe impact on deer populations. CWD is a contagious and fatal brain disease affecting deer, requiring strict regulations in areas where it’s confirmed. Transportation of carcasses is prohibited outside these zones to prevent disease spread, and hunters can only transport deer heads to permitted taxidermists with a specific sample number. Supplemental feeding is banned in management zones to reduce deer concentration and contact with the disease. Current CWD management zones include North Mississippi, Issaquena, and Harrison areas. For more details, visit the MDWFP website.

Blood donors needed to replenish critically low supply after Helene
SUMMARY: The American Red Cross is urgently seeking blood donations due to critically low supplies exacerbated by Hurricane Helene’s aftermath, which has caused the cancellation of over 100 blood drives. This situation has led to significant shortages, highlighting the importance of donations for those with urgent medical needs. To encourage contributions, donors of blood, platelets, or plasma in October will receive a $10 Amazon gift card and be entered into a drawing for $5,000 gift cards. The organization stresses the need for donations, especially from areas unaffected by the hurricanes. More information can be found on their website.
