Mississippi Insight for Oct. 6: Bedillion, Thompson, Reeves and Horhn
SUMMARY:
This week’s Mississippi Insight explores the impact of the state’s lifetime voting ban for felons, affecting at least 55,000 individuals, disproportionately impacting Black voters. Journalist Caleb Badillion from The Marshall Project highlights the confusion surrounding Mississippi’s two-tiered voting laws and shares personal stories, like that of John Cook, a man barred from voting despite his rehabilitation. Additionally, Governor Reeves reports record tourism contributions of $17.5 billion to the state, while new mayoral candidate John Horn outlines his vision for Jackson’s revival. The ongoing legal and legislative challenges surrounding these voting laws remain critical, as advocates seek reform.
The Marshall Project’s Caleb Bedillion breaks down his report on the wide impact of Mississippi’s voter disenfranchisement law. The governor touts new record-breaking numbers for state tourism. And John Horhn unveils his run for the mayor’s office in Jackson. Hosted by 12 News’ Byron Brown and produced by Tom Wright.

Jackson police work to solve recent homicides
SUMMARY: The Jackson Police Department (JPD) has solved the two latest homicides, making three arrests within 24 hours, with a fourth pending. Police Chief Joseph Wade attributes the 80% solvability rate to a new focused approach that prioritizes witness statements, physical evidence, and technology. He emphasizes accountability for violent crimes, aided by new federal resources after Jackson was designated a public safety partnership city. While crime rates have declined, Wade stresses the importance of community involvement and judicial reform, advocating for stricter bail for violent offenders to bolster crime-fighting efforts.
