NC elections board pass bipartisan resolution to support voting access in WNC
SUMMARY: The State Board of Elections in North Carolina unanimously passed a resolution to enhance voting capabilities following Hurricane Helen. With county election offices reopened, the resolution addresses two critical issues: ensuring citizens can vote and maintaining election integrity. Key measures include modifying early voting sites, adjusting schedules, and allowing additional absentee ballot drop-off locations. Local officials and volunteers have worked diligently to ensure a smooth election process, with no lost or damaged ballots reported. Leaders urge current elected officials and candidates to focus on rebuilding and easing bureaucratic hurdles for those affected by the hurricane.
The resolution, which applies to Ashe, Avery, Buncombe, Haywood, Henderson, Madison, McDowell, Mitchell, Polk, Rutherford, Transylvania, Watauga, and Yancey counties, involves a series of provisions that range from modifying early voting sites and schedules to allowing for additional locations for voters to drop off their absentee ballots.

Hurricane Milton Category 5 Current Path and Impact
SUMMARY: Hurricane Milton has rapidly intensified into a category 5 storm with winds at 160 mph, setting records as the strongest October storm in the Gulf. It is expected to remain a category 5 until Tuesday before weakening to a category 4 and making landfall in Florida late Wednesday or early Thursday, likely around Tampa. While Florida braces for significant impacts, North Carolina will experience minimal effects due to a cold front that has moved through the area, leading to cooler temperatures and only breezy conditions with gusts up to 30 mph later in the week.
The latest path from the National Hurricane Center shows that we will be hundreds of miles north and west of the storm Thursday, and it is a smaller storm than Helene was.

NC leaders approve flexibility for voters in Helene counties
SUMMARY: The deadline to register to vote is Friday, yet concerns are rising in Western North Carolina about accessibility due to recent severe damage. The State Board of Elections voted to allow more flexibility in conducting elections in 13 counties heavily impacted by the disaster. This includes using temporary voting sites and permitting bipartisan teams to assist voters in disaster shelters with absentee ballots. Voters can return ballots in person on Election Day at any precinct and displaced individuals can submit ballots in other counties. A briefing will follow on the status of voting sites and preparations for upcoming elections.
The North Carolina Board of Elections voted unanimously to give the hardest-hit counties more flexibility in how they conduct the elections.
