Louisiana nursing home owner to pay $8.2 million to resolve embezzlement case
SUMMARY: Bob Dean Jr. and several of his companies will pay $8.2 million to settle a federal embezzlement case. The U.S. Department of Justice announced this resolution, alleging that Dean misappropriated and misused assets and income from four nursing homes in Louisiana, which he owned and operated during and after Hurricane Ida in August 2021. His management of these facilities faced scrutiny following a chaotic and deadly evacuation. The settlement addresses the federal government‘s claims against him for his actions during this period.

Louisiana lawmakers hold first of two days of hearings on tax reform | Louisiana
SUMMARY: The House Ways and Means Committee discussed Governor Jeff Landry’s ambitious tax reform proposals on Tuesday, aiming to significantly revamp Louisiana‘s tax system. His plan suggests a flat tax for individuals and businesses and broader taxation on goods and services to address a projected $1.5 billion budget deficit. Key changes include raising the standard deduction and a uniform 3% tax rate, benefiting lower-income taxpayers while increasing contributions from the top 10%. Critics, including Jan Moller, warn of potential negative impacts on public school teachers and emphasize the need for thorough fiscal analysis of the proposals. Further hearings will proceed.
