Mississippi’s cotton harvest draws near
SUMMARY: Mississippi’s cotton harvest approaches amidst concerns over yield due to extreme weather. Last year’s harvest yielded 850,000 bales, contributing about $400 million to the economy, but challenges like droughts, heavy rainfall, and hurricanes threaten this year’s output. Extensive wind damage has particularly affected crops along the Eastern seaboard, while excessive rainfall has compromised fiber quality, impacting profits. Fortunately, late planting helped protect crops during Hurricanes Francine and Helen. Farmers in Mississippi are now awaiting drier conditions to defoliate the cotton. Meanwhile, yields in Georgia and the Carolinas have declined, potentially leading to higher prices for cotton.
Mississippi’s cotton harvest is right around the coroner, but with extreme weather this season, some of that yield could have been impacted.

SUMMARY: Today marked the last day for voter registration in Mississippi, with the November election approaching. Lauderdale County Circuit Clerk Donna Jill Johnson emphasized the importance of both absentee and in-person voting as civic duties. Many voters, including 18-wheeler drivers and medical professionals in Meridian and Lauderdale County, often request absentee ballots due to uncertain work schedules. Johnson highlighted that while absentee voting is necessary for some, nothing compares to voting in person at precincts. The circuit clerk’s office remains open from 8 AM to 5 PM on weekdays for voter assistance.
