Report: Stadium, arena subsidies not worth it for taxpayers | National
SUMMARY: A Tax Foundation report reveals that taxpayer-funded subsidies for new or renovated sports stadiums often fail to deliver promised tax revenue and job growth. Research consistently indicates these subsidies merely redirect spending rather than generate new economic activity. Prominent examples in 2024 include proposed subsidies for the Tampa Rays and Chicago Bears, both at $2.4 billion. Critics argue such projects, like Philadelphia’s new arena, are often accompanied by misleading economic claims. Economists stress that cities, not teams, drive local economies, with several cities, such as San Diego and Seattle, thriving despite losing major sports teams.
