SUMMARY: Three hurricanes are currently being tracked off the west coast of Africa, but only Hurricane Milton poses a significant threat, expected to strengthen into a major hurricane and impact Florida this week. As of the latest advisory, Milton is moving east with 85 mph winds and is projected to make landfall in Florida on Wednesday. Central and South Florida may experience significant impacts, while the News 5 viewing area anticipates only minor effects such as rough surf. Local weather will become clearer and cooler this week, with temperatures dropping by the weekend, creating a pleasant fall-like atmosphere.

The stubborn cloud cover continued today, and temperatures were only able to make it into the mid-80’s. Overnight, temperatures will drop to around 70° again, and the clouds will be clearing from the area. Monday will be warmer in the upper-80’s, and we will have a lot more sunshine. Once a cold front can dive south and through the area later in the day on Monday into early Tuesday, we will see drier conditions for much of next week with highs dropping into the low-80’s by Thursday and lows dropping to around 60°. That front will keep Milton to the south of the News 5 area. The News 5 First Alert Storm Team is tracking three hurricanes: Kirk, Leslie, and Milton. Hurricane Milton is in the western Gulf of Mexico. It is forecast to become a major hurricane before making landfall along the west coast of Florida bringing significant impacts to the FL peninsula. A cold front will keep this system on that east/northeast track, so no direct impacts are expected for the News 5 area. Rough surf and gusty winds will still be possible as this system passes far to our south next week. Kirk and Leslie are both hurricanes in the central Atlantic, and these do not pose a threat to our area. There is an area off the west coast of Africa that has a low chance of formation, and it also does not pose a threat.

The WKRG News 5 First Alert Storm Team covers part of southeast Mississippi, southwestern Alabama, and northwest Florida. You can also view the full Sunday evening forecast for the Gulf Coast here: https://tinyurl.com/5dp9smer

SUMMARY: Public health officials in Alabama are warning about a rise in whooping cough cases, particularly at Hillcrest High School in Tuscaloosa. Dr. Karen Landers from the Alabama Department of Public Health explains that the illness, although old, is resurfacing and can cause severe symptoms, especially in infants and the elderly. Adults should also be aware, as the disease can be severe for those with other health issues. Dr. Colleen Toby Donahue emphasizes the importance of staying up to date on vaccinations and contacting a doctor if symptoms occur. Preventative measures, such as handwashing and staying home when sick, are critical.

It is colloquially known as whooping cough, but doctors know it as pertussis. Confirmed cases of the disease have been reported at Hillcrest High School in Tuscaloosa and the University of Alabama in Huntsville, so doctors are urging Alabamians to stay aware.
