SUMMARY: The tropics are active with Hurricanes Kirk and Leslie in the Atlantic, but they pose no threat to the U.S. Hurricane Milton is rapidly strengthening in the Gulf of Mexico, with 85 mph winds and a pressure of 983 mbars. It’s expected to become a major hurricane, potentially reaching Category 4 when making landfall in Central and South Florida this week. Areas like Tampa and Sarasota are most likely to feel significant impacts, including tropical storm-force winds, heavy rainfall (5-12 inches), and storm surge of 3 to 6 feet. Flash flooding and rough surf are concerns as Milton approaches.

Meteorologist Grant Skinner gives an update on the tropical activity in the Atlantic Basin. The News 5 First Alert Storm Team is tracking three hurricanes: Kirk, Leslie, and Milton. Hurricane Milton is in the western Gulf of Mexico. It is forecast to become a major hurricane before making landfall along the west coast of Florida bringing significant impacts to the FL peninsula. A cold front will keep this system on that east/northeast track, so no direct impacts are expected for the News 5 area. Rough surf and gusty winds will still be possible as this system passes far to our south next week. Kirk and Leslie are both hurricanes in the central Atlantic, and these do not pose a threat to our area. There is an area off the west coast of Africa that has a low chance of formation, and it also does not pose a threat.
