Push underway to strengthen South Mississippi homes ahead of hurricanes
SUMMARY: A new initiative in South Mississippi aims to enhance home resilience against hurricanes while lowering insurance premiums. Mississippi Insurance Commissioner Mike Cheney discussed the “Strengthen Mississippi Homes” program, designed to fortify homes similarly to successful programs in Alabama and Louisiana, where homeowners see premium reductions of 30–40%. Key improvements involve strengthening roofs and garage doors. Although initial legislative support was limited, discussions with insurance companies indicate they will offer discounts for mitigation efforts. Concerns about rising flood insurance premiums due to recent hurricanes persist, and new private flood insurance options are being explored to alleviate these issues.
A push is underway to strengthen South Mississippi homes to stand up better against hurricanes and lower insurance premiums.
