Milton forecast to become a major hurricane, Significant impacts along the FL peninsula: 4p Saturday

SUMMARY: Meteorologist Alis Grant Skinner reports on the active tropics, with Hurricane Kirk and Hurricane Leslie in the Atlantic, while Tropical Storm Milton, formed today, poses a significant threat to the Florida Peninsula. Currently at 40 mph, Milton is expected to strengthen into a major hurricane by Tuesday. The forecast indicates landfall near Tampa, with potential for severe storm surge and inland flooding, possibly 5-7 inches in some areas. Residents are advised to prepare hurricane safety plans. While the News 5 area may experience minor impacts, updates will be provided continuously on WKRG.com and TV.

Meteorologist Grant Skinner gives an update on the tropical activity in the Atlantic Basin. The News 5 First Alert Storm Team is tracking Kirk and Leslie which are both hurricanes in the central Atlantic, but these do not pose a threat to our area. There is a new area off the west coast of Africa that has a low chance of formation, and it also does not pose a threat. The last system is Tropical Storm Milton in the western Gulf of Mexico. It is forecast to become a major hurricane before making landfall along the west coast of Florida bringing significant impacts to the FL peninsula. A cold front will keep this system on that east/northeast track, so no direct impacts are expected for the News 5 area. Rough surf and gusty winds will still be possible as this system passes far to our south next week.

Blustery to end the week in Central Alabama with frost likely to kick off the weekend

Evening temperatures for playoff games will dip to 44°F, feeling colder. Saturday may bring frost and freeze warnings, with temperatures possibly reaching freezing.
