Dallas County has paid $1.5M for 2014 murder case that still hasn't reached trial
SUMMARY: Dallas County has spent over $1.5 million on attorneys and special prosecutors for the 2014 murder case of Janet Vanderslice, which has yet to go to trial. David Wade McDermott, indicted in 2015 for the murder of the Garland grandmother, has seen over 30 court date postponements and multiple changes in legal representation. Frustration is growing among family members and officials as justice remains elusive, with McDermott released on bond in 2017. The case is currently scheduled for trial in January, but many see the prolonged delays as a failure of the justice system.

Northwest Houston residents fed up with neighborhood eyesore
SUMMARY: Residents of a northwest Houston neighborhood are frustrated by an abandoned, unkempt property that has become a significant nuisance. Despite multiple calls to the city for assistance, the property remains a mess, featuring overgrown weeds and a neglected pool, attracting pests and vagrants. Neighbors, like Thurman Jackson and Johnny WeDo, who take pride in their homes, feel it’s unfair to maintain their yards while living next to this eyesore. After KPRC’s investigator, Robert Arnold, raised the issue, city inspectors have promised to address the situation. A new county office is also being contacted to help manage such properties effectively.

Exclusive: At least 1.5 million illegal southwest border crossers reported in FY24 | National
SUMMARY: Preliminary data indicates that at least 1,525,210 foreign nationals illegally crossed the Southwest U.S. border in fiscal 2024, excluding various data categories that suggest the total may be higher. In three Democratic-led western states, apprehensions reached nearly 1 million, significantly overshadowed by Texas‘s 530,640. Texas represents a major entry point but has seen a shift in illegal activity due to enhanced border security efforts. Critics argue that the Biden administration’s parole programs have improperly allowed over 1.3 million inadmissibles into the U.S. while misrepresenting the overall illegal entry situation. Official data will be released later this month.
