Study shows more than $20 million lost from 2019 Bonnet Carre Spillway opening
SUMMARY: A study has revealed lasting impacts from the Bonny Cary Spillway opening in 2019, which has resulted in approximately $22 million in financial losses for the coastal region. The seafood industry, particularly devastated, lost over half of this amount, as the oyster production has dwindled to zero. With the decline in oyster harvesting, only shrimp remain for some processors, who face financial struggles. This downturn has also affected tourism and led to nearly 400 job losses. The Mississippi Sound Coalition aims to address these issues to find a solution that balances the interests of all parties involved.
Results from a Mississippi State University study on the impacts of the 2019 Bonnet Carre Spillway opening have been released.
