Special election results coming in
SUMMARY: In a recent election previously held by former councilwoman Angelique Lee, confusion and frustration arose among new candidates unfamiliar with the process. A ballot box arrived at the Hood Building shortly after polls closed at 7 PM, leading to delays as city election employees spent an hour and a half feeding ballots into two counting machines. A surrogate expressed dissatisfaction with the slow counting process, questioning the limited number of machines available. The election commission stated they had to use smaller machines from Hinds County, as larger ones were being prepared for the upcoming November presidential election, resulting in a lack of immediate precinct results.

Mississippi power cooperatives continue work on power lines after hurricane
SUMMARY: After Hurricane Helen struck Florida, approximately 60,000 customers remain without power five days later. The outages are concentrated in the Big Bend area, extending to the Georgia state line. At one point, over a million Floridians lost electricity due to the hurricane’s destructive impact, which included severe flooding and infrastructure damage. Power cooperatives from Northeast Mississippi, including Tom Bigby Electric and Alcorn County Electric, are actively working to restore power. Crews are putting in long hours to assist hurricane victims, with efforts expected to continue for about five more days to help residents regain essential services.
Three northeast Mississippi power companies are still working out of state following Hurricane Helene.
