Death toll, damage mounts in Helene aftermath. Here’s how Mississippians can help
SUMMARY: Hurricane Helene, which intensified to a Category 4 storm, struck the Florida coast last Thursday night, affecting six states and resulting in over 130 fatalities, with many missing in Asheville, NC. The storm caused catastrophic flash floods and damage estimates reaching $20 billion, marking it as one of the century’s largest storms. President Biden expressed condolences and affirmed federal support for recovery efforts, highlighting close coordination with local authorities. Although many want to help, officials caution against personal aid that could hinder recovery. Mississippi has deployed resources to assist affected areas and urges donations to be limited to cash.

Impending worker strike not expected to impact Mississippi port
SUMMARY: Union dock workers are preparing for a significant strike affecting East Coast and Gulf of Mexico ports due to stalled negotiations over wage increases. The International Longshoremen’s Association is demanding a 77% pay hike over six years, while the United States Maritime Alliance has offered a 40% raise. The Port of Pascagoula in Mississippi, however, reports that operations will continue unaffected thanks to a mix of union and non-union labor. Without intervention from the Biden administration, the potential strike could disrupt the economy, impacting supply chains for essential goods like fresh fruit and coffee, as retailers brace for delays.
