Historic flooding after Helene
SUMMARY: East Tennessee and North Carolina experienced severe flooding due to Hurricane Helen and additional weather factors, with some areas in the Southern Appalachian Mountains receiving over 2 feet of rain. Rainfall totals reached over 30 inches in Buck, North Carolina, and nearly 14 inches in Asheville. A low-pressure system combined with a stalled cold front resulted in prolonged rainfall across the region. This persistent rain, exacerbated by orographic lift in mountainous areas, led to significant flooding. The North Carolina National Guard captured footage illustrating the extensive impact on affected regions. Further detailed radar imagery will be featured in News 2 at 4.

2 confirmed dead in Cocke Co. after historical flooding
SUMMARY: More than 100 people are confirmed dead and thousands are missing after Hurricane Helen struck Florida’s coast and caused devastation across the Southeast, particularly in Tennessee. The death toll is expected to rise as over 100 individuals remain unaccounted for. Among the confirmed fatalities are Jean and Mike Obrist from Newport County, described by the mayor as victims of a “100-year event.” The Obrists were members of the Church of the Good Shepherd.
The DOH confirmed one death was in Unicoi County and another was in Johnson County. Mayor Rob Mathis confirmed two more fatalities in Cocke County.
