Jackson files complaint in Smith-Wills Stadium fight
SUMMARY: A legal dispute has emerged between the City of Jackson and the state of Mississippi over Smith-Wills Stadium. The city refuses to hand over the stadium’s deed, following a letter from Attorney General Lynn Fitch, who claims the city breached the 1944 deed’s requirements for park use. As per House Bill 1983, Fitch is enforcing a reverter clause. The city has filed a complaint seeking a declaratory judgment against Fitch and the state. City Councilman Brian Grizzell expressed concerns about potential racial and political motivations behind the action. The stadium currently hosts the Hank Aaron Sports Academy.

Supreme Court declines to hear appeal from Mississippi death row inmate
SUMMARY: The U.S. Supreme Court has declined to hear an appeal from Leslie โBoโ Galloway III, a Mississippi death row inmate convicted of murdering high school student Shakeylia Anderson in 2008. Galloway, now 41, was convicted in 2010 for running over Anderson after abducting her and has argued that his trial attorneys provided ineffective representation. His ongoing appeal in federal court includes claims of racial bias in jury selection, as he was sentenced by an all-white jury, and challenges to forensic testimony used against him. Galloway maintains that had his background been presented, a life sentence could have been secured instead of death.

Test scores improve across state
SUMMARY: In Starkville, Mississippi, recent trends show improved test scores and accountability ratings for local schools, as highlighted by Rachel Canter, Executive Director of Mississippi First. This progress is attributed to higher state standards, enhanced curricula, and collaboration among educators. Canter noted that when over 65% of schools achieve a B grade, the Mississippi Department of Education must raise the cut scores, making it more challenging for students. Despite potential changes, she emphasizes the importance of believing in the learning capabilities of all students, demonstrating consistent growth in educational outcomes over the past decade.
