The grant supports overtime for 45 specially trained police officers and funds a full-time mental health professional to assist on these calls. This initiative aims to divert individuals with mental health issues away from jail and towards treatment. Lexington typically sees 3,000 mental health-related emergency calls annually. City officials and lawmakers express optimism for the program’s success, highlighting the importance of officer safety and available mental health support during crisis situations.
