Fairhope library hires new director amid controversy over books
SUMMARY: Robert Gourlay has been appointed the new director of the Fairhope Public Library, succeeding Tamara Dean, who retired earlier this year. Gourlay, an assistant director since 2022 and a library staff member since 2015, takes over amidst challenges regarding certain books in the library’s collection from groups like Clean Up Alabama and Moms for Liberty. These groups criticize the current board for retaining books they deem inappropriate for minors. While Gourlay plans to maintain existing policies set by Dean, he acknowledges possible future changes depending on board decisions and community needs.
