SUMMARY: Body camera footage has been released of the police shooting of 58-year-old John Robert Smith, an armed veteran, at the Atlanta VA Hospital in January. The recording shows DeKalb County police attempting to persuade Smith to drop a knife he held against his neck, but he refused to cooperate, even as multiple officers were present. When Smith moved towards hospital staff, officers fired several shots, ultimately killing him. DeKalb County District Attorney Sheri Boston announced that no charges would be filed against the officers, expressing the tragedy of the incident, as Smith was someone’s father and son.

SUMMARY: A grand jury has indicted 14-year-old Colt Gray and his father, Colin, in connection with the mass shooting at Appalache High School in Barrow County on September 4th. Colt faces 55 charges, including murder, aggravated assault, and cruelty to children, after opening fire and killing two teachers and two students, injuring nine others. Colin is charged with 29 counts for allegedly enabling his son to possess a firearm. Both are set to appear for arraignment on November 21st.

SUMMARY: Paris-based pharmaceutical and healthcare company Sopi has announced an $18 million grant over 10 years to support three historically black medical schools: Morehouse School of Medicine, Howard University College of Medicine, and Mahy Medical College. The grant aims to enhance clinical research staffing, improve infrastructure—such as online chat services and pharmacy upgrades—and develop customized training programs to advance the educational and operational capabilities of these institutions over the coming decade.
