Tropical Storm Helene devastates parts of southeast U.S.
SUMMARY: Michael Presley Bobbit captured images of Cedar Key after Hurricane Helen hit Florida as a Category 4 storm with winds up to 140 mph and a 15-foot storm surge. Ignoring evacuation orders, Bobbit checked on his community, struggling to reach his mother’s house due to deep flooding. Florida’s governor reported thousands of overnight rescue missions, particularly in South Pasadena, where several homes caught fire. Helen marks the third hurricane to strike Florida’s Big Bend region in 13 months, causing damage that surpasses previous storms, although Tampa General Hospital remained dry thanks to a flood prevention wall.
Tropical Storm Helene has caused deadly widespread flooding in the Appalachains after coming ashore along Florida’s gulf coast as a major hurricane.

Arkansas animal shelter temporarily closed after staff quits
SUMMARY: The city of Malver is facing a severe shortage of space for its 37 dogs, with only 27 kennels available. The shelter has temporarily closed due to the departure of its two full-time employees. Mayor Brenda Weldon stated that part-time workers are currently caring for the animals, but the lack of volunteers following a dog attack earlier this year has compounded the issue. Adoptions are low, and local rescues are at capacity, raising concerns about the potential need to euthanize animals if the situation doesn’t improve and the number of dogs can’t be reduced.
Malvern Mayor Brenda Weldon says the shelter is currently facing several challenges, including overcrowding and a lack of staff.
