Hurricane Helene strengthening as it barrels toward Florida's Big Bend coast
SUMMARY: Hurricane Helen is strengthening as it moves through the Eastern Gulf of Mexico, currently affecting 80 million people in the southeast with warnings of hurricane and tropical storm force winds. Key West is experiencing severe waves, and the storm is expected to make landfall in Florida’s Big Bend Coast later tonight. CBS News hurricane expert David Yans notes that Helen could reach category 3 status, with winds up to 90 mph. Preparations should be completed by sunrise, as the storm’s effects will extend beyond Florida, bringing flooding and wind threats to parts of Georgia, South Carolina, and further into the Midwest.
Hurricane Helene is getting stronger as it approaches Florida, potentially making landfall Thursday evening or early Friday morning. Helene may bring catastrophic winds and heavy rain to many parts of Florida and Georgia. CBS News meteorologist David Yeomans has more.

Hurricane Helene: Strengthens to Cat. 3 storm as it nears Florida
SUMMARY: Hurricane Helen has strengthened into a Category 3 storm, with winds reaching 120 mph, as it approaches Florida’s panhandle. The National Hurricane Center issued an intermediate advisory following reconnaissance by Air Force hurricane hunters. Expected to make landfall around midnight, the storm may reach Category 4 status. Areas from Alligator Point to Taylor County, particularly Tallahassee, are vulnerable, with potential for significant impact and rare direct landfall. Residents should prepare for high winds, power outages, and a heightened tornado threat. The storm poses a serious risk, marking a historical event for Tallahassee, which has never experienced a major hurricane.
