DOJ: City of Lexington violated citizens’ civil rights with unlawful arrests, fines
SUMMARY: The U.S. Department of Justice’s report condemns Lexington, Mississippi, and its police for systemic constitutional violations, including unlawful arrests of those unable to pay fines, excessive force, and racial discrimination. The investigation revealed a pattern of misconduct, with the Lexington Police Department arresting nearly 25% of its population, primarily for low-level offenses, disproportionately affecting Black residents. Additionally, the department imposed unjust money bail and lacked accountability mechanisms. Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke emphasized the need for police to respect citizens’ rights, announcing plans for community engagement on reforms. The department will work with Lexington to rectify these issues.
