Police in small Mississippi city discriminate against Black residents, Justice Department finds
SUMMARY: A Justice Department report revealed that the Lexington Police Department in a predominantly Black Mississippi city engages in racial discrimination, excessive force, and retaliation against critics. The investigation found a “persistent pattern” of unconstitutional conduct, including unjustified arrests and a lack of internal accountability. Officers reportedly used Tasers excessively, with one instance involving a Black man shocked 18 times. The department imposes fines for minor offenses and unlawfully detains individuals unable to pay. Attorney General Merrick Garland emphasized that these practices undermine the trust between police and the community. Police Chief Charles Henderson could not be reached for comment.
