Hurricane Helene will be moving into the Gulf today becoming a major Category 3 storm before Florida
SUMMARY: Today and tomorrow are designated impact days due to weather disturbances. Today, a front will bring intermittent rain and storms, particularly affecting southeastern areas. There’s a low severe risk for gusty winds and possibly a brief tornado. Rain is already reported in northern regions. Tomorrow, tropical system Helene will intensify and bring 20-40 mph wind gusts and heavy downpours, raising flooding concerns, especially late evening. A flood watch is in effect for several counties, predicting 2-4 inches of rain, with some areas seeing up to 6 inches. Caution is advised against driving through flooded roads. Conditions will improve Friday.
Helene’s size “will likely cause an extensive area to be affected by the storm’s hazards,” the National Hurricane Center’s update said Tuesday evening.

Congressional Committee Moves Forward with Nuclear Power Proposal | Sept. 26, 2024 | News 19 at 6 p.
SUMMARY: A new bill, HR 9710, introduced by Congressman Dale Strong, aims to advance nuclear power in the U.S. and has passed favorably through the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology. It calls for the U.S. Department of Energy to build and demonstrate small modular reactors by fiscal year 2034 to meet the growing energy demand. One proposed reactor may be established at the Bellefonte Nuclear Plant site in Jackson County, Alabama, which has been unused since the 1980s after an abandoned construction project. This initiative could revitalize the site using American-made technology and address energy needs.
A new bill moving through congress could lead to a new future for the Bellefonte nuclear plant site in Jackson County.
