Hurricane Helene, now a Category 2 storm, expected to intensify before making landfall
SUMMARY: Hurricane Helene has been upgraded to a Category 2 hurricane and is expected to make landfall on Florida’s northwestern coast, bringing potentially “catastrophic” storm surges of up to 20 feet and maximum sustained winds of 100 mph. Currently located 365 miles south-southwest of Florida’s Big Bend, Helene is predicted to rapidly intensify into a Category 4 storm. Warnings and emergencies have been declared in Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas due to the storm’s extensive coverage and impact. Meteorologists emphasize the necessity of evacuating low-lying areas, as the surge is deemed “unsurvivable.”
