Mississippi authorities concerned about rise in fentanyl cases
SUMMARY: Mississippi authorities, particularly the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, express heightened concern over rising fentanyl cases, especially in college towns. In 2023, 140 reported fentanyl cases marked the highest since 2018, amidst a total of 2,000 drug cases statewide. Overdoses also surged, with 263 reported in both 2020 and 2023. SUMMARY: Three men from Vicksburg, Willie Johnson (49), Jermaine Johnson (46), and Calbert Cosby (22), were arrested on September 26 in relation to a shooting that took place on June 7. The incident occurred in the 4100 block of Washington Street when officers found a wrecked vehicle and a 25-year-old victim, Devontay Knight, suffering from a gunshot wound. All three men face charges of drive-by shooting and aggravated assault, with Willie Johnson and Jermaine Johnson’s bonds set at $225,000 each, while Cosby’s bond is set at $250,000.
