Interview: Nature Fest and Tallahatchie Riverfest happening in New Albany
SUMMARY: The Tahachapi River Festival will feature a Nature Fest this Saturday, celebrating National Public Lands Day. Jill Smith, director of the Union County Heritage Museum, highlights various educational programs on topics including Mississippi mushrooms, wildlife rehabilitation, alligators, turtles, bats, and birds. Andrew Ballard will speak on mushrooms at 11 AM. Smith emphasizes the importance of bats for the ecosystem, including pest control. Nature walks and herbalist presentations will also be available. Nature Fest runs from 11 AM to 4 PM at the park along the Tallahatchie River, coinciding with River Fest, which starts at 9 AM.

Laurel High School students take stand on domestic violence
SUMMARY: Laurel High School’s student council commemorated Domestic Violence Awareness Month through an annual balloon release, honoring survivors and remembering victims. Students and leaders gathered on the front lawn, writing names and messages on balloons before releasing them into the air. The council collaborated with Laurel Police and the Domestic Violence Victim’s Advocate to provide resources and information about domestic violence. They aimed to support those affected and give a voice to victims. Additionally, the student council donated laundry detergents to the Missing Peace Ministry, emphasizing the importance of community engagement in addressing this critical issue.

Lamar County man sentenced to 134 years in prison
